Radeon Eyefinity and function: the tri-screen for noobs, finally!


With the Radeon HD series 5xxx, AMD (yes, for those who did not, it's over ATI, now AMD Radeon place) was very happy we announce a concept exclusive to their cards: the Eyefinity. Prior to that, and if one puts aside Matrox graphics card was for one or even two screens. Eyefinity with the bourgeois delusions will be able to speak, since this function has to manage, for each card, up to 3 screens (5xxx series, despite the existence of some exotic models) and Now up to 6 screens in series on the 6xxx series. One constraint: it is mandatory to go through DisplayPort if one wants to go further than simply connecting 2 screens.

I personally like tri-screen for a while. Being a Fanboyz ATI anyway, it was an argument for me to stay true to the brand of Ruby (ATI's muse, nothing to do with some Italian president). Configuration changes recently, passage on Radeon HD 6870. The opportunity dreamed of cracking and thus pass into the camp of the wealthy and decadent hardware. For this, several steps

Total bill, taking into account the resale of the LG: about 350 euros. It's expensive, I admit, but "finally" the price of one 27-inch now.

Installation is relatively simple: you plug the 3 screens on GC, they are aligned correctly, the computer is turned on. Base, the 3 screens are detected, no worries. Rest to refine the installation in the drivers: it aligns the screens in good order, we prepare a few profiles (Finity eye, not eye Finity), and go for some tests.

Eyefinity The concept is to provide a gaming experience across multiple screens (even if the games do not include this option at the base, which is still the case very general). In this case, it will be the 5760 * 1080. However, the Eyefinity is not always a perfect solution: the quality of experience depends greatly on the type of game and some design details. Below are my few tests:

- GRID, Burnout Paradise : Superb. These games are ultra-smooth with all options enabled, the effect of speed is enhanced. The player does not really watch the side screens, but the expanded display improves immersion and sensation.

- Titan Quest : Very good. Also perfectly smooth, but there is a "bug" interesting. Indeed, with such a viewing distance, you realize that the enemies are activated only when the character close enough. In this case, the external displays, one discovers static enemies who eventually come to life only if we are moving towards them. It breaks the immersion, but it can be a simple option to change a bit stashed.

- Dawn of War II: Not terrible. ; one hand, we must tweak hidden options to get a usable display (HUD elements are spread over 3 screens, which makes the game super boring). Another concern, the effect of "distorted vision" on external displays disorder legibility of the game. Finally, the performances are not exceptional: it begins to be felt in the fluidity of the action.

- Sins of Solar Empire : Contrast. Stretching the vision at the edges is noticeable. But by nature austere 4x game, this is not necessarily problematic even if a little cloudy (the elements 2d does not appear stretched unlike anything 3d). Moreover, the huge display area to manage its end with a galaxy of true comfort.

- Battlefield Bad Company 2, Crysis, Team Fortress 2 : Test Eyefinity on some SPF was a moral obligation. In BF2, it works perfectly, but it will calm down on the graphics, or leave one or more cards more powerful. With my triple FullHD resolution, the game runs about 25 fps with my usual options: it's too little. On Crysis, surprisingly, performance remains reasonable, provided they do not abuse either. Again, we are in the 20 fps on average. Too little for my taste, so I continue on the single screen. However, on most FPS optimized or older, the contribution of Eyefinity can be very interesting, provided that the HUD can adapt. Indeed on TF2, the HUD is completely broken on three areas of displays, which sacked a little experience. In short, Eyefinity and FPS are pretty good household in theory, is to align the computing power. A test on titles such as Fear, which rely a lot on the atmosphere for disposal.

- And finally, the crack cocaine of gaming: Eve Online ... beautiful, upscale. And not even need to switch to Eyefinity, the game includes an option to switch to multi-screen. The field of vision is perfect, the huge display area can finally manipulate the game without choking on the figures, windows and extensive information, the performance of 6870 are well beyond what it takes to EO. More generally, a few remarks:

- ; The performance degrades obviously with such a display surface, but less important than I feared. A single graphics card and 200 euros just to keep the shock condition of not being too greedy in some way.

- With such a display surface, with such screens, the beginnings are a little disturbing: it seems to spend his time to rotate the head, you feel lost. Do not panic: it's coming soon. And after a month of practice, provided that the backspace seems impossible.

- The field of vision is sometimes disappointing with Eyefinity. In fact, default on games that do not provide, we are witnessing around the edges to distortion of perspective, a stretching of the image. On a racing game, do not worry, the sensation of speed is greatly increased. By cons on RTS as DOW2, it seems to fly over a planet so small that its curvature appears violently, while the angle of vision, skimming off (you start to see very far on the edges). For this genre, the best would obviously be a non-distorted vision, but just wider. Or why it is necessary to calculate an angle of vision screen, and not one for the 3 screens.

- is often forgotten when talking about games and Eyefinity, but have 3 screens outside gaming concerns, it's still exceptional comfort. It was never an office big enough, do not forget.

- There is obviously no obligation to play Eyefinity if one branch 3 screens. The player is free to play in mono screen, duo or tri screen.

By remaining aware of the ultra-bourgeois character sorting screen, and the limitations that still has this technology, I admit being partial to this sort of thing and I applaud ATI / AMD for this beautiful shot. It works well, and commercially, that's an excellent concept: if I want to have 3 screens at the same time, there is no much choice, I must stay with ATI / AMD. Unless Nvidia not getting down.

A title out of my radar for that matter, I'd heard, had even had my interest for some time. Alas, I was probably better to do at the time its output or price of 70 euros had cooled. It must be borne in mind that BR is a game relatively short and shallow, with something else to offer than high-end gameplay: an atmosphere, a delusion and a soundtrack of insanity.

Before discussing the qualities of this title, we get rid of the "art" of the game is relatively average. The framerate is sometimes a bit feverish, handling (by car) is sometimes painful, textures are not always very clean, the models are in good average. Like elsewhere throughout the 2nd part of the game, with titles that are unlocked, more and more aggressive as and as the story becomes "gloomy". 100 titles for a soundtrack brilliantly, and we get beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the highest qualities of Brutal Legend: you attack the ears, it is completely immersed in this strange world where the metal is become reality, where wars are done shots of fans and concerts, where weapons Most classes are electric guitars. What should be the "Power Metal", simply.

BL is not essential. But it is a charming title, attractive and has lots of qualities. A good game that feels the passion, the same passions: passion of gaming, passion of metal music. The association is very much more than mayonnaise supermarket, do not hesitate to take a few copies at 10 euros.

Mass Effect 2 or how to go around the galaxy in 40 hours.


Everyone already knows: Mass Effect was a small wonder in the world of action-RPG. A rich new universe, populated by races of aliens, crammed with pseudoscientific explanations and tension-Galactico geo-political achievement bourgeois atmosphere frankly successful. Even then, it was not a secret, Mass Effect was only the first of a trilogy Bioware.

Okay. Now we are in 2011, and I finally laid hands on Mass Effect 2. After 40 hours of gameplay, I only have to wait for the 3rd episode, and draw some conclusions.

40 hours of gameplay is rather good news . I might be able to pull up to 45h life if I was really careful, but overall, I have scoured the title content. It all starts with our Shepard, a hero of the first episode, on patrol in search of a bogus threat. Suddenly it's drama, a strange vessel vast warp of nowhere, tears in the Normandy 2, along with signing the end of the short trip of the hero and his pals. The scene ends with our hero stranded in space, its combination leaking, and a long fall to a dismal world. No surprise: one dies well, this kind of plan.

In other words, in terms of design and creativity, Mass Effect 2 provides, but it is high time that the game designer starts to page. The coating is good, the content is hollow.

ME1 had been widely criticized for passages of Mako and his somewhat laborious exploration of the solar system's universe. Bioware wanted to fix this. Mako finished, only a few short missions bonus offer to lead a kind of hovercraft not unpleasant. The exploration has been split into several aspects. First, you can / need to scan the planets in search of primary resources needed to benefit from improvements to your characters and Normandy 2. If Mass Effect 2 was a pure shooter, it would be a mediocre game and quickly forgotten. Fortunately, SW2, is primarily an adventure game, with the script, characters, quests and choices. And, fortunately, Bioware better control this domain. Note nevertheless that since Alpha Protocol (admittedly, really exceptional in that it offers freedom to build his story), SW2 took a little getting old. remains that we will have the opportunity to meet a nice bunch of characters, each with its own history, his style, his arms and endearing personalities. From convict punk raging through the Gallarien fun, we will find some old friends who are a pleasure to revisit. All this accompanied by a classical (Cons damage that the recipe is very similar for each character): the meeting - some discussion - a quest of loyalty - some discussions and that's all. This gives a small artificial side sauce RPG but as the dialogs are cool, we will overlook this aspect too mechanical. Different characters will still interact with either Shepard or between them, when conflicts or missions. This really appealed to me in SW1, and I am therefore pleased to find this whole side of space opera series in ME2. Be careful though, in French, some choice dialogue me a little confused sometimes. Note that the quests loyalty are often an opportunity to take a strong decision, whose impact will undoubtedly in the 3rd episode Mass Effect. It's really all do better.

On PC (because I play on PC, just to get the fluid and anti-aliased FullHD) Mass Effect 2 is beautiful . Not insanely beautiful, but beautiful. The Unreal Engine 3 has been put to better use, with good management textures, framerate indecent, beautiful lighting effects and more expressive faces and well modeled. Conversely, the plague on some textures a little slimy (including elsewhere on the characters, from one arrives at the torso, with loose clothing and ill-defined). Clashes enjoy explosions and showers of sparks cool. By cons, just like this game definitely very heterogeneous ME2 suffers from the recurring presence of small bugs , although not usually serious, but that break the mood. Twice (about 40h), my character was suddenly blocked "in the air", obviously stuck in invisible walls. Too bad, the finish is a bit inadequate.

Regarding the balance "creative" in ME2 is a great success. I acknowledge that a good customer for science fiction, since it takes little to make me dream. Some planets in space, a black hole, it's good I'm already conquered. The universe is very consistent, with new races (the Drell and Vortchas), and new places "key" as Illium, great commercial city Asari, or Omega, ghetto lawless space attached to a dirty pebbles . The choice of colors and moods full of dark screens, neon, small conversations intercepted over the walks, the outrageousness of some landscape, all contribute to flatter the retina and launch the imagination. The characters are well regarded and enjoy a pleasant attention, in order outfits and small details. As for your ears, they will be amazed by soundtrack epic and effective, with beautiful set pieces and intriguing tracks, mystical and captivating. I especially appreciate these songs with synth, terribly "science fiction style. A style that had already capsized in the first episode. Great job, for once. Doubling French is honorable. Not wonderful, but honorable. I did not see any option for the American voices (boxed version of the game), which I regret, the U.S. version is very high.
