Intervention Benoît Hamon, spokesman of the Socialist Party, the National Council of 9 June
Dear Comrades,
Earlier, a comrade, his face tanned, taking me by the arm, told me "I am a Social Democrat and I think your speech was too remote from the party on left, which explains why so many voices have been displaced socialists to greens. "
I sometimes wonder why we do not respect more? Why it inflicts such rough analysis and why we do not watch reality our collective failure in the face? I wonder why, when it comes to record a failure, after three successive defeats in national elections, we are still thinking that in the battle of interpretation, there is still room for a small scratch a small victory to be carried in the aircraft? I wonder why we are still trying to drive a little closer together to strengthen a bit more yourself. I take my share. I never claimed to be exemplary, but I think what is expected of us, after a difficult campaign, is that we respected. We belong a large political group that deserves, if not we all love, respect us.
I would like to thank all the activists who, in a campaign that was not easy because we do not have anything saved, have put their pride and their feelings in their pocket. I thank these friends who have decided to campaign for the PS, some with a lot of commitment and desire, others merely out of duty because he had to work for the party.
I want to say a few words what I see after this election. We got 2.1 million votes fewer than 2004. The extreme left has collected more than 600,000 and the Greens over 1.5 million, 2.1 million in total. There is no doubt that the votes were scattered elsewhere, but essentially it is within the left that the voices were redistributed.
The question that therefore arises now is why the working classes no longer vote for us and worse, why have they taken the habit of not coming to vote?
If you want to prepare seriously in 2012, we will address this issue know there in the next three years. It is a central issue.
Objectively, the European social democracy - We all say with our words - never ceases to be in crisis. That same from its ranks came the main argument put us in knee early in the campaign. Some thought that we could campaign about the economic and social crisis, offer solutions and at the same time that President Barroso had to stay of the Commission. When
Lagarde calls for deficits related to the crisis would be set aside, which is opposed to that? Two European Socialists. On one side Joaquin Amunia Commissioner Economic and Monetary Affairs from the PSOE and the German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck SPD. They are companions, who on the question of the Stability and Growth - while Ms. Lagarde can not be suspicious of a major regulatory and social conversion - defending liberal orthodoxy. This crisis of social democracy are, let us not in denial. Do not be in denial because this crisis also explains why some theories that we have advanced together in the Party of European Socialists - whatever our current membership or another - have not been heard.
For this term, we will, I think that 157 euro-socialist deputies. Observe that countries in which we made a good score were those where the debate was the most cleavage. I observe that where comrades have governed in coalition, where they have significantly refocused, where they have more time to learn the lessons of the crisis that the Liberals, they have had failures similar to or worse than we know in France.
We have two historical tasks: preparing tomorrow how the French socialist left will regain power in France and prepare for the rebuilding of European social democracy.
That's why I think the answer to what we just experienced can not be a matter of design, fashion, changing device.
The answer can not be to repeat what we have often done: change a little speech, replace this with another friend and hope that everything will be better.
The problem we have is that we do not want.
And even when we say interesting things, people no longer believe in us.
the markets during the door-to-door campaigning, we were asked what we would do so different from the Liberals. And when it came to make proposals, we were asked if we were able to govern in spite of internal divisions.
We've all experienced. We fail to embody an alternative to the liberal model, or to make a credible alternate. We are all responsible for this failure and I do not exclude myself from this observation.
We now have a basic 17%. That gives us some reason to believe that we have a duty to initiate a new historical stage.
All Left parties have undertaken a task that is their own transcendence: the far left with the creation of the NPA, to our left with the creation of the Left Front, - Even if that party gets only 31,000 votes more than in 2004, though at the time there was a big vote helpful favorable to the Socialists - and the Greens on the side with the creation of Europe ecology is able to exceed what was previously their identity.
Our task today to put us also in the process of overtaking. It's my belief. I do not think this is just another bounce in internal casting around yet another different, that we will propose an alternative and credible alternative to the liberal model. So how
PS pass this over?
I think we should be overwhelmed by a political process leading to the formation of a common house of the left - in the words of Martin - with three subjects.
First, the project. I observe, that left everyone asking the same questions: the role of the state, the possible regulation at national and international protections, wages, the distribution capital - labor, protection of environment, etc..
We ask these questions in the same way. Of course, we do not hierarchically in the same way, but it should be easy to gather around a table of political leaders and activists of Left parties to discuss.
Second, the 2012 deadline. I am personally in favor of a single candidate of the left, but we must ask this question without preconditions and without imposing an agenda for discussion.
With one goal: to put us in position to beat Nicolas Sarkozy, on behalf of and with the support of working and middle classes.
Thirdly, the establishment of a common house of the left, regardless of its name, which effectively allows activists to speak, to confront.
If we get this over, without preconditions, with no desire to dominate, not dictate our own agenda, I think the PS found a way to rebuild and to again become the bearer of a political hope. I wish that we set this week that ambition. I wish that we propose publicly to our partners that offer of working together.
Thank you.
